The photo: A platoon of armoured anti-aircraft artillery in the 1980s. Consisting of three PRTLs,
a YPR-765 Prco, a DAF YA-4440 and a Landrover Collection Netherlands Institute for
Military History. CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication.
The PRTL serves as an anti-aircraft gun against low-flying aircraft and helicopters.
It has one of the Gepard's different target acquisition and targeting radar, developed at Hollandse Signaalaparaten. The crew consists of a sergeant-commander, a corporal-designator and a corporal-driver. Nine complete crews were assigned to each PaLua platoon, allowing the three PRTLs to operate around the clock: the crews rotated from the PRTL, to the stinger group (during the day), to rest.
The undercarriage is a modified Leopard 1 undercarriage with a ground clearance of 44 cm.
The turret can rotate 360 degrees within four seconds. The vehicle is equipped with a target-searching radar with a maximum range of 15 km. It also has a target tracking radar. The artillery consists of two Oerlikon 35 mm calibre rapid-fire guns, which have an effective firing range of 4800 metres (FAPDS ammunition) or 3850 metres (HE ammunition) and can fire 550 shots per minute per barrel. The muzzle velocity is 1400 metres per second.
